Frequently Asked Questions About Physiotherapy
Do I need a GP referral to see a physiotherapist?
No, you can book directly with our physiotherapists without a GP referral. However, if you have private health insurance, check if they require a referral for claims. We also have a private GP in the clinic, if you need to see a doctor.
What should I wear to my physiotherapy appointment?
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the area being treated. For lower body problems, shorts are ideal. For shoulder/neck issues, a loose t-shirt or vest works well.
How many physiotherapy sessions will I need?
This varies depending on your condition. Some acute injuries improve in 2-3 sessions, while chronic conditions may need 6-8 sessions or ongoing maintenance. We’ll give you an honest assessment after your initial appointment.
What’s the difference between physiotherapy and sports massage?
Physiotherapy is a regulated healthcare profession involving assessment, diagnosis and treatment using techniques including manual therapy, exercise prescription, and electrotherapy. Sports massage focuses specifically on soft tissue treatment. Often they work beautifully together – our physios can recommend if massage would help your treatment plan, and we have a sports massage therapist in the clinic.
Can physiotherapy help with chronic pain?
Yes, physiotherapy is highly effective for managing chronic pain conditions. We use a combination of manual therapy, exercise, education, and pain science principles to help you reduce pain levels and improve function.
Is physiotherapy treatment painful?
Treatment shouldn’t be painful, though you may feel some discomfort during certain techniques, especially if treating tight or injured tissues. Our physiotherapists always work within your tolerance and will adjust treatment if needed. Many people find treatment quite relaxing.
Do you offer exercises I can do at home?
Absolutely. Home exercises are a key part of physiotherapy treatment. We’ll give you a personalised exercise programme tailored to your condition and show you exactly how to do each exercise correctly. We can also email you videos or diagrams.
Can I claim physiotherapy on my health insurance?
We can provide all necessary receipts and treatment notes for insurance claims. Check with your insurance provider about coverage – most private health insurance policies cover physiotherapy treatment.
Is there parking available?
Yes, we’re on Helensburgh seafront with plenty of on-street parking and nearby car parks. Or if you’re coming by train, we’re a short walk from Helensburgh Central train station.
