Whole person care: Why we take an integrated approach to health

At The Lomond Clinic we like to take an integrated whole-person approach to your health and wellbeing.

We believe that true wellness comes from understanding how everything in your body connects. Because you’re not simply a collection of separate parts – you’re a wonderfully complex, interconnected whole person. And that’s why our integrated, whole-person approach to healthcare and wellbeing isn’t about just treating isolated symptoms – we’d rather dig a bit deeper, have a proper look at what might be going on to cause it all, and offer a care solution that considers all aspects of your wellbeing.

That’s not to say we wouldn’t help you with a one-off treatment if that’s what you’d prefer – just that sometimes it’s worth looking at the bigger picture.

Imagine you’ve popped in to The Lomond Clinic to sort out a niggle, and while you’re here we end up having a more rounded chat about your overall wellbeing. That happens a lot – and it can shed light on what might be at the root of your problem. Or, if you’ve given us permission to discuss your case with our colleagues, our team can work collectively to make sure everyone’s on the same page about how best to help you.

We’ve all being doing this for a while (for some of us, longer than we’d care to admit!) and we’ve noticed over the years that health niggles rarely exist all on their own. That annoying shoulder pain might actually be linked to how you’re sitting when you’re stressed; those skin flare-ups might be telling us something about inflammation in your body; and that tiredness you can’t shift could have several different things feeding into it.

By thinking of you as a whole person – not just a collection of separate symptoms – we can look at the bigger picture and offer integrated whole-person healthcare that does more than just temporarily patch things up. Your body works as one beautifully complex system, so we reckon your healthcare should work that way, too.

Have you ever popped in to see someone about one thing, only to discover the root cause was something entirely different? Or, maybe gone to the doctor with a pretty firm idea of what’s up, only to find out it’s something you hadn’t even considered? We see it quite a lot, and it’s one of the most fascinating parts of what we do. It’s like a puzzle, and our team is great at working together to uncover the true source of what’s bothering you*.

Some of the surprising connections we spot:

  • Skin troubles that tell an internal story
Many lovely clients come through our doors looking for help with persistent skin issues, for Jill to realise there might be nutritional imbalances or tummy troubles at play. It’s brilliant when different disciplines – like nutrition and skincare – come together. Suddenly we’re sorting the issues you can see in the mirror and the imbalances that cause them!

  • Achy joints with a hormonal twist
We often have women booking in for physiotherapy or massage because their joints are giving them grief – not realising these niggles might actually be telling us something about perimenopause or menopause. We specialise in women’s health, so Zena and Sakshi will be able treat you appropriately with physio or exercise, as well as being able to tap into a whole suite of integrated treatment options from other disciplines in the clinic – including nutrition, holistic therapies and medical options like HRT – which can help.

  • Weight puzzles and sleep secrets
It’s quite common for someone to be trying really hard with their weight, doing all the ‘right things’ and still not getting to where they want to be. And sometimes we can find that there’s a stumbling block that hasn’t occurred to you: sleep. Poor sleep is a big issue if you’re trying to manage your weight, because if you’re not getting enough shut eye it can increase stress and hunger hormones and make it easy to fall back on unhealthy habits to get you through the day. Our GP, Dr Joyce and our hypnotherapist Christine can help you sort out the sleep side of things, while Rachael can help you with your approach to nutrition and exercise.

  • Tummy troubles with an emotional link
Those nagging stomach pains and digestive issues? It’s not uncommon to find out they’re actually your body’s response to anxiety or stress. A combination of Rachael’s nutritional guidance and a supportive chat with Liz (counsellor), Kathryn (Clinical psychologist), Marie (CBT specialist) or Christine (hypnotherapist) can make all the difference – to both your tummy and your mind.

  • Back pain from the way you move
Niggly lower back or hip pain? It might feel like you’ve tweaked something, but it could be down to the way you move. You might not be aware of anything unusual in how you walk or stand, but gait analysis can flag up the almost imperceptible ways your body compensates for weakness or injury – which can have repercussions elsewhere in your body. Zena and Sakshi (our physiotherapists) can help redress the balance, while Craig (sports & remedial massage) eases your discomfort using massage techniques, cupping and acupressure, alongside recovery and strengthening exercises.
